Why people believe it

"It doesn't hurt, so it can't be serious." Many women wait for pain before seeing a doctor.

What the evidence shows

Early breast cancer is often painless. Pain, or the lack of it, cannot tell you whether a breast lump is cancer. Only a proper evaluation can.

What you can do

See a doctor for any of these, painful or not: a lump or thickening, a change in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, a nipple that turns inward, nipple discharge, or swelling in the armpit.
