Better to remove the lump first and test later?

Many women, and sometimes clinics, want the lump taken out quickly to end the worry, with the tests done afterwards.

The right order is a scan (ultrasound and/or mammogram) and a needle biopsy before any operation. The biopsy shows whether the lump is cancer, what type it is, and its markers, such as hormone receptors and HER2. With that information, surgery can be planned properly: often keeping the breast, and sometimes after medicines given first to shrink the tumour. If a cancer is removed without these tests, staging is harder, a second operation may be needed, and options such as keeping the breast can be lost.
