Breast cancer Myth Buster #24 · Symptoms

A lump while breastfeeding is just milk?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most lumps during breastfeeding are blocked ducts or milk cysts, but a lump that doesn't go away needs checking.

Why people believe it

The breasts change so much during pregnancy and breastfeeding that a new lump is easily put down to milk, by women and their families alike.

What the evidence shows

Blocked ducts, milk cysts and infections are common, and they usually settle within days to a couple of weeks. Breast cancer during pregnancy or breastfeeding is uncommon, but when it happens it is often found late because it is mistaken for these changes. An ultrasound is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and a needle biopsy can be done if needed.

What you can do

If a lump lasts more than two weeks, keeps growing, or comes with skin or nipple changes, see a doctor. You can usually keep breastfeeding while it is being checked.
