Cancer treatment Myth Buster #19 · Targeted therapy

If targeted therapy stops working, no further treatment is possible?

✕ Not true
Fact

Cancers can become resistant, but repeat testing or other treatments may offer further options.

Repeat biopsy or liquid biopsyA new tissue sample, or a blood test for tumour DNA, can look for the change that caused resistance.

Why people believe it

When a tablet that worked well stops working, families often feel that the last option has gone.

What the evidence shows

Many cancers eventually find a way around a targeted drug. Repeating the tests, with a new biopsy or a blood test that detects tumour DNA (a "liquid biopsy"), can sometimes find the change that caused resistance, and a different targeted drug may work against it. Other options include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or clinical trials.

What you can do

Ask whether repeat testing could find a new target, and what the next treatment options are.
