Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #07 · Symptoms & early detection

Colorectal cancer always causes abdominal pain?

✕ Not true
Fact

Early bowel cancer is often painless. Bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia or a change in bowel habit may be the first signs.

Haemoglobin and iron testsA simple blood test shows whether you are anaemic, and whether iron is low.

Why people believe it

People expect a serious bowel problem to hurt, so painless symptoms are easy to ignore.

What the evidence shows

Pain usually comes later, once a tumour is larger or partly blocking the bowel. Cancers on the right side of the colon often cause no bowel symptoms at all, and show up only as anaemia: tiredness, breathlessness or looking pale. Unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia in an adult, especially a man or a woman after menopause, should always be investigated.

What you can do

Don't wait for pain. If you are told you have iron-deficiency anaemia without a clear cause, ask why, and whether your bowel should be checked.
