Constipation always means colorectal cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most constipation has nothing to do with cancer. A new, lasting or worsening change in bowel habits, especially with bleeding, anaemia or weight loss, needs a check.

Why people believe it

Some people panic over every change in their bowels, while others ignore a change that has lasted for months.

What the evidence shows

Constipation is very common, and usually caused by too little fibre or fluid, inactivity, medicines or other conditions. What matters is change: a new pattern of constipation, diarrhoea, or alternating between the two, that lasts more than three to four weeks, especially in someone over 40, or that comes with bleeding, anaemia or weight loss.

What you can do

For ordinary constipation, more fibre, water and activity usually help. See a doctor for a change that persists, or comes with any warning signs.
