Blood in the stools is always caused by piles?

✕ Not true
Fact

Piles are common, but bleeding from the back passage can also be a sign of polyps or bowel cancer. Bleeding that persists, keeps returning or isn't explained needs checking.

Doctor's examinationA doctor's examination is the first step. Mention every symptom, and how long it has lasted.

Why people believe it

Piles are so common in India that almost any bleeding is blamed on them, often for months, sometimes with home remedies or ointments.

What the evidence shows

Piles usually cause bright red blood on the toilet paper or in the pan, often after straining. But bowel cancer can bleed in a similar way, and the two can exist together. Blood that is darker or mixed with the stool, or bleeding with other changes, is more concerning. Only an examination, and often a colonoscopy, can tell the difference.

Warning signs that need a check

  • Blood mixed with the stool, or dark, maroon or black stools
  • Bleeding that keeps coming back, or continues after treatment for piles
  • A change in bowel habit lasting more than three to four weeks
  • Unexplained weight loss, tiredness or anaemia
  • A feeling that the bowel hasn't emptied fully

What you can do

Don't assume bleeding is piles. See a doctor, especially if you are over 40 or have any of these signs.
