Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #09 · Symptoms & early detection

A normal stool test completely rules out colorectal cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Stool tests such as FIT can miss cancers and large polyps. A negative result does not rule out cancer in someone with symptoms.

FIT stool test

Why people believe it

A normal laboratory report is reassuring, and people may stop looking for the cause of their symptoms.

What the evidence shows

The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) looks for tiny amounts of hidden blood in a stool sample. It is a useful screening test when repeated regularly, but tumours and polyps bleed on and off, so a single test can miss them. For people with symptoms, a colonoscopy is usually the test that answers the question.

What you can do

If you have bowel symptoms, don't let a normal stool test end the investigation. Ask whether you need a colonoscopy.
