Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #13 · Diagnosis & treatment

Every colorectal cancer needs the entire intestine removed?

✕ Not true
Fact

Surgery is tailored to where the tumour is and how far it has spread. Most patients do not need their whole colon removed.

Bowel surgeryMany bowel operations are done by keyhole surgery, through small cuts, with a quicker recovery.

Why people believe it

Fear of losing the bowel, and of living with a bag, keeps many people from seeing a doctor.

What the evidence shows

Usually, only the section of bowel containing the cancer is removed, together with the nearby lymph nodes, and the two ends are joined back together. Many of these operations are done by keyhole surgery, with a quicker recovery. Removing the whole colon is needed only in uncommon situations, such as some inherited conditions with many polyps.

What you can do

Ask your surgeon which part of the bowel needs to be removed, whether keyhole surgery is possible, and whether a stoma is likely.
