Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #12 · Diagnosis & treatment

Removing a polyp during colonoscopy makes cancer spread?

✕ Not true
Fact

Removing polyps prevents cancer, and lowers the number of people who develop colorectal cancer. Proper removal does not make cancer spread.

Why people believe it

Some people fear that cutting out a growth will disturb it, and refuse to have polyps removed.

What the evidence shows

Most bowel cancers start as polyps, so removing them (polypectomy) stops that process. Polyps are removed through the colonoscope with a small wire loop or forceps, with no cut on the body. Every polyp is examined under the microscope; occasionally a polyp contains a very early cancer, and the result shows whether removal was enough or whether more treatment is needed.

What you can do

If polyps are found, agree to their removal, and keep to the follow-up colonoscopy schedule your doctor recommends.
