Radiotherapy has no role in colorectal cancer?

Radiotherapy has an established role in selected rectal cancers, particularly locally advanced ones. It is not routinely used for most colon cancers.

For rectal cancer, radiotherapy, often combined with chemotherapy, is commonly given before surgery to shrink the tumour, make surgery more successful and lower the chance of the cancer returning in the pelvis. It can sometimes make the tumour disappear completely. For colon cancer, radiotherapy is used less often, mainly to control symptoms such as pain or bleeding.
