Capecitabine is changed into 5-FU inside the body. In trials it was at least as effective as injected 5-FU after surgery for colon cancer, and it is used in many combinations. Because it is taken at home, it is important to take it exactly as advised and to report diarrhoea, mouth sores, painful red hands and feet, or chest pain early.
