Almost all cervical cancers are caused by long-lasting infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), not by inherited genes.

HPV is a very common virus passed on through sexual contact, and most sexually active people get it at some point. In a small number of women, high-risk HPV types persist for years and slowly cause changes in the cervix that can become cancer. Smoking and a weakened immune system make this more likely. Because the cause is known, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, through HPV vaccination and regular screening.
