HPV infection means a woman will definitely get cervical cancer?
Most HPV infections clear on their own. Only long-lasting infection with high-risk types can cause precancerous changes, which develop slowly over years.

Being told you have HPV can be frightening, and many women hear it as a cancer diagnosis.
What the evidence shows
Most HPV infections are cleared by the body's immune system within one to two years, without causing any problems. In a few women, a high-risk type persists and can cause precancerous changes in the cervix. These usually take many years to become cancer, which is why screening works so well: it finds and treats these changes long before cancer develops.
What you can do
A positive HPV test is a reason for follow-up, not panic. Follow your doctor's advice for repeat tests or a closer examination of the cervix (colposcopy), and don't miss appointments.
