Every woman with gynaecological cancer must have her uterus removed?

Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer. Some early cervical cancers can be treated while keeping the womb, and many others are treated with chemoradiation rather than surgery.

Many women believe that any cancer "down there" means a hysterectomy, and fear of losing their womb or fertility keeps them from seeing a doctor.

Treatment is tailored to the cancer. Some very early cervical cancers can be removed with a cone biopsy, or by removing the cervix while keeping the womb (trachelectomy). Cervical cancers that are larger or have spread locally are usually treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy together, without a hysterectomy. Womb cancer is usually treated with surgery, and ovarian cancer with surgery and chemotherapy, though younger women with some very early cancers may be able to keep their womb and one ovary.
