Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #30 · Treatment & recovery

Taking a week off radiotherapy for a festival or travel does no harm?

✕ Not true
Fact

Unplanned breaks during head and neck radiotherapy let the cancer cells regrow and lower the chance of cure.

RadiotherapyHigh-energy beams, shaped by computer planning to fit the tumour and spare healthy tissue. Each session is painless and takes minutes.

Radiotherapy lasts six to seven weeks, so a few days off seem small, especially for family events or when travel is hard.

What the evidence shows

Head and neck cancers can regrow quickly when treatment pauses. Studies show that a longer overall treatment time is linked with more cancer coming back. Side effects such as pain and poor eating, which often cause breaks, can usually be treated so that radiotherapy continues.

What you can do

Plan family events and travel around the treatment dates. If pain, eating or transport is a problem, tell the team early so they can help you continue.
