Immunotherapy has replaced surgery and radiotherapy for head and neck cancer?

Fact

Surgery and radiotherapy remain the main treatments that cure head and neck cancer. Immunotherapy helps some patients, mostly as an addition or when cancer comes back.

Tablet treatmentsTargeted treatments and hormone therapies are often tablets taken at home, chosen to match the cancer.

Why people believe it

News about new immune treatments makes people hope that one injection can avoid an operation.

What the evidence shows

Immunotherapy can help selected patients when given around surgery, and it helps some people whose cancer has spread or come back. It does not replace the operation or radiotherapy in curable cancer, and it works in only some patients. A test called PD-L1 on the biopsy helps decide who may benefit.

What you can do

Ask your team whether immunotherapy has a role in your treatment, and what the evidence and costs are, but do not delay surgery or radiotherapy while waiting.
