Every lump or ulcer in the mouth is cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most mouth ulcers and lumps are harmless, caused by injury, infection or irritation. But ones that persist or look suspicious need assessment, and sometimes a biopsy.

Why people believe it

With so much awareness about mouth cancer, some people become frightened by every ulcer.

What the evidence shows

Most mouth ulcers are caused by biting the cheek, a sharp tooth, ill-fitting dentures, hot food or ordinary mouth ulcers, and they heal within one to two weeks once the cause is removed. Small lumps are often harmless too. What matters is whether a lesion persists, grows, bleeds or feels hard. Those need a doctor's examination, and sometimes a biopsy.

What you can do

Don't panic about every ulcer, and don't ignore one that lasts. If a sharp tooth or denture is rubbing, get it fixed by a dentist; if the ulcer still hasn't healed two weeks later, get it checked.
