Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #13 · Diagnosis & staging

A normal blood test means there is no head and neck cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Routine blood tests cannot reliably rule out these cancers. Doctors use examination, endoscopy, scans and biopsy instead.

EndoscopyA thin, flexible tube with a camera lets the doctor look directly inside. It is usually quick and done with local anaesthetic.

Why people believe it

Many people expect a blood test to show whether something serious is going on, and feel reassured when the results are normal.

What the evidence shows

There is no routine blood test that detects head and neck cancer. Blood counts and other routine tests are usually completely normal, even when a cancer is present. These cancers are found by a doctor looking at and feeling the mouth and neck, examining the throat and voice box with a small camera (endoscopy), CT or MRI scans, and a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

What you can do

Don't let a normal blood report stop you from getting a mouth or throat symptom examined. Ask for a proper examination of the area.
