If cancer spreads to the neck lymph nodes, it is automatically stage IV and can't be cured?

Head and neck cancers commonly spread first to the lymph nodes in the neck. The stage depends on where the cancer started, the size of the main tumour, how many nodes are involved and how big they are, and, for some throat cancers, whether the cancer is HPV-related. Some cancers with neck nodes are stage III, and some are classified as stage IV, but even many stage IV head and neck cancers that haven't spread to distant organs are treated with the aim of cure, using surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For throat cancers caused by HPV, a separate staging system is used, and many cancers with neck nodes are only stage I or II, with very good results from treatment.
