Fact

After a laryngectomy most people learn to speak again, most often with a small voice valve, or with an electronic device or food-pipe speech.

A small one-way valve placed between the windpipe and food pipe lets air from the lungs vibrate the throat to make speech. A speech therapist teaches its use. Other options are a hand-held electronic device and learning to speak using air from the food pipe. Many people return to work and family life.

Ask to meet a speech therapist before the operation, and, if possible, someone who has had a laryngectomy.
