Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #27 · Treatment & recovery

A feeding tube during treatment means you will never eat by mouth again?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most feeding tubes used during head and neck treatment are temporary. They keep you nourished through the sore weeks, and most people return to eating by mouth.

Doctor's examinationA doctor's examination is the first step. Mention every symptom, and how long it has lasted.

Why people believe it

A tube looks permanent and frightening, and people fear it means the end of normal meals.

What the evidence shows

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can make swallowing painful for some weeks. A tube prevents dangerous weight loss and treatment breaks. Continuing to swallow small amounts and doing swallowing exercises helps the muscles recover. A small number of people do need long-term tube feeding, which is why exercises and early speech-therapy support matter.

What you can do

Keep swallowing what you safely can, do your swallowing exercises, and ask when the tube can come out.
