After successful treatment, follow-up isn't necessary?

✕ Not true
Fact

Follow-up is essential to catch any return of the cancer, new cancers and late effects of treatment early, and rehabilitation continues long after treatment.

Why people believe it

After months of demanding treatment, many people want to put hospital visits behind them, especially when they feel well.

What the evidence shows

Head and neck cancers can return, most often in the first two to three years. People treated for these cancers also have a higher risk of a new cancer in the mouth, throat, lungs or food pipe, especially if they continue to use tobacco or alcohol. Late effects such as dry mouth, dental problems, jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty and an underactive thyroid after neck radiotherapy can appear months or years later, and many can be helped.
