Pan masala without tobacco is completely safe?

✕ Not true
Fact

Areca nut (supari) causes cancer on its own, even without tobacco. It also causes oral submucous fibrosis, a condition that can turn into mouth cancer.

Why people believe it

Pan masala and sweet supari are often sold and marketed as tobacco-free, so they are seen as a harmless mouth freshener, and are even given to children.

What the evidence shows

Areca nut, the main ingredient of supari and pan masala, is officially classified as a cause of cancer in humans, even without tobacco. Regular chewing can cause oral submucous fibrosis: a slow stiffening of the inside of the cheeks that makes it hard to open the mouth, and that can lead to mouth cancer. Adding tobacco increases the risk further.

What you can do

Avoid supari and pan masala, including the sweet and "tobacco-free" kinds, and keep them away from children. If you chew them regularly, have your mouth checked, especially if you notice burning with spicy food or difficulty opening your mouth.
