Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #04 · Causes & risk

Head and neck cancers happen only in elderly people?

✕ Not true
Fact

These cancers become more common with age, but younger adults can get them too, including HPV-related throat cancers.

Why people believe it

Mouth and throat cancer is often pictured in older people with decades of tobacco use, so younger adults may dismiss warning signs.

What the evidence shows

Age raises the risk, but head and neck cancers are seen in people in their 30s and 40s, especially those who started chewing tobacco or areca nut young. Cancers of the tonsils and back of the tongue caused by HPV often affect adults in middle age, many of whom have never used tobacco.

What you can do

Don't ignore a mouth ulcer, patch, lump or voice change because you are young. If it lasts more than two weeks, get it checked.
