Kidney cancer and cancer of the renal pelvis are the same disease?

Renal cell carcinoma starts in the kidney tissue itself, while renal pelvis cancer usually starts in the lining of the kidney's drainage system. They differ in biology, surgery and medicine treatment.

The renal pelvis is the funnel that collects urine and drains it into the ureter. Cancers there usually arise from the same type of lining as the bladder (urothelial cancer), behave more like bladder cancer, are often linked to smoking, and are treated differently, often by removing the kidney together with the ureter. Because similar cancers can appear in the bladder, regular bladder checks with cystoscopy are part of follow-up.
