Blood cancer is always hereditary?
Most leukaemias are not inherited. Some genetic conditions and family tendencies raise the risk, but most cases occur without any strong family history.

Why people believe it
When someone in the family has leukaemia, relatives, especially parents of a child with leukaemia, often fear it runs in the family, or blame themselves.
What the evidence shows
Leukaemia usually develops from changes that happen by chance in blood-forming cells during a person's life; these are not passed on to children. A few conditions raise the risk, such as Down syndrome and some rare inherited syndromes. Other known factors include previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy, long exposure to the chemical benzene, and smoking.
What you can do
Brothers, sisters and children of someone with leukaemia usually don't need special tests. If several relatives have had blood cancers, ask your doctor whether genetic counselling would help.
