Leukaemia always causes a very high white blood cell count?

The white cell count may be high, normal or even low at diagnosis. Some people mainly have anaemia or low platelets.

In leukaemia, abnormal cells crowd the bone marrow. Sometimes many of them spill into the blood, giving a very high white count, but in other people the count is normal or low, because the marrow can't make enough healthy cells. The clues may instead be a low haemoglobin (anaemia) or low platelets. Looking at the blood under the microscope (a blood smear) can show abnormal cells.

If you have symptoms of leukaemia, ask for a complete blood count and a blood smear, and don't be reassured by the white count alone.
