Leukaemia Myth Buster #18 · Modern treatment & survivorship

Blood transfusions can cure leukaemia?

✕ Not true
Fact

Transfusions support people with anaemia or low platelets, but they do not destroy leukaemia cells.

Blood and platelet transfusionGiven through a drip to correct low counts during treatment; they support the body, but don't treat the leukaemia.

Why people believe it

Because leukaemia is a blood disease, some families believe that replacing the blood will cure it.

What the evidence shows

Transfusions of red cells and platelets are a vital part of supportive care during leukaemia treatment, correcting anaemia and preventing bleeding. But the leukaemia starts in the bone marrow, which keeps producing abnormal cells, so only treatments that target the leukaemia itself can control or cure it.

What you can do

Ask the team how often transfusions may be needed, and whether family and friends can help by donating blood or platelets.
