A normal blood count means leukaemia has completely disappeared?

Normal blood counts don't always mean the leukaemia has gone. Highly sensitive tests for minimal residual disease (MRD) may be essential.

After the first phase of treatment, blood counts often recover and the leukaemia is in "remission". But a small number of leukaemia cells can remain, too few to see under the microscope. MRD tests can detect as little as one leukaemia cell among tens of thousands of normal cells, and the result helps decide whether more or less treatment is needed. For ALL, treatment often continues for about two years in total.
