Every leukaemia patient needs a bone marrow transplant?

Many people with leukaemia, including most children with ALL, are cured without a transplant. A transplant is usually advised for higher-risk leukaemias, or for leukaemia that returns. It carries significant risks, so the team weighs the benefits for each person. Donors may be a brother or sister, an unrelated donor, or increasingly, a half-matched family member such as a parent.
