Leukaemia Myth Buster #11 · Treatment

Every leukaemia patient needs chemotherapy immediately?

✕ Not true
Fact

Acute leukaemias usually need prompt specialist treatment. Some people with CLL and no symptoms can be monitored, and CML is usually treated with tablets.

Why people believe it

Families expect cancer treatment to mean chemotherapy, started straight away.

What the evidence shows

Acute leukaemias, ALL and AML, usually need treatment within days, in a specialist centre. In contrast, many people with early CLL have no symptoms and can safely be monitored for years ("watch and wait"), with treatment starting only when needed. CML is usually treated with daily targeted tablets rather than chemotherapy.

What you can do

Ask what type of leukaemia it is, how urgent treatment is, and what form it will take.
