Liver cancer Myth Buster #28 · Life after treatment

After a liver transplant, the anti-rejection medicines can be stopped once you feel well?

✕ Not true
Fact

No. Anti-rejection medicines are needed for life after a liver transplant. Stopping them can make the body reject the new liver.

Anti-rejection medicinesTaken every day for life, at the same times; regular blood tests check the level.

Why people believe it

Feeling well makes daily tablets seem unnecessary, and people worry about side effects.

What the evidence shows

The immune system sees a transplanted liver as foreign and would attack it without anti-rejection (immunosuppressive) medicines. Doctors use the lowest dose that protects the liver; in people transplanted for liver cancer, keeping the dose low may also help reduce the risk of the cancer returning. These medicines raise the risk of infections and skin cancers, so sun protection and regular skin checks matter. Some medicines, including certain cancer drugs and immunotherapy, can trigger rejection, so the transplant team must always be consulted.

What you can do

Take anti-rejection tablets on time every day and never stop or change them on your own. Keep every blood test, protect your skin from the sun, and tell any doctor who treats you that you have had a liver transplant.
