After part of the liver is removed, you can never live or work normally again?
Most people return to normal daily life and work after liver surgery. In a healthy liver, the remaining part grows back towards its original size.
Why people believe it
Losing part of such an important organ sounds permanent and disabling.
What the evidence shows
The liver is the only organ that can regrow. After part of a healthy liver is removed, the rest enlarges over the following weeks and months; a liver with cirrhosis regrows less, which is why surgeons remove less of it. Most people return to their usual activities within a few weeks to a few months, sooner after keyhole surgery. Walking from the first days, slowly building up exercise and eating enough protein help recovery; heavy lifting waits until the wound has healed, as the surgeon advises.
What you can do
Ask your surgeon when you can drive, lift and return to work. Walk a little more each day, eat enough protein, avoid alcohol and keep your follow-up scans.
