Liver cancer Myth Buster #06 · Tests & diagnosis

Every lump in the liver is cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many liver lumps are harmless, such as haemangiomas and cysts. The right type of scan is needed to tell them apart.

Contrast CT scanA dye injected into a vein during the scan shows how a lump fills with blood, which helps identify it.

Why people believe it

Being told there is a "lesion" or "lump" in the liver is frightening, and many people assume the worst.

What the evidence shows

Ultrasound scans often pick up liver lumps by chance. Many are benign: haemangiomas (a harmless tangle of blood vessels, the most common), simple cysts (fluid-filled sacs), and focal nodular hyperplasia (a harmless overgrowth of normal liver cells). A specialised scan, a CT or MRI with contrast dye, usually shows what the lump is. A new lump in someone with cirrhosis or hepatitis B needs particularly careful checking.

What you can do

If a scan shows a lump in your liver, don't panic and don't ignore it. Follow up with your doctor, who may recommend a contrast CT or MRI.
