Liver cancer Myth Buster #05 · Tests & diagnosis

A normal AFP blood test rules out liver cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

AFP can be normal even when liver cancer is present. Diagnosis depends mainly on scans and, in some cases, a biopsy.

AFP blood testUsually taken at the same visit as your liver ultrasound.

Why people believe it

AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) is often called the "liver cancer marker", so many people assume a normal level means there is no cancer.

What the evidence shows

AFP is a protein that some liver cancers release into the blood. But many liver cancers, especially small, early ones, don't raise it. AFP can also go up for other reasons, such as active hepatitis or pregnancy. That is why AFP is used alongside an ultrasound, not instead of one.

What you can do

Don't rely on an AFP result alone. If you are being checked for liver cancer, make sure you also have the scan your doctor recommends, and keep to the schedule.
