Surgery is the only way to cure liver cancer?

Surgery is one option. Liver transplant, ablation and, for some people, focused radiotherapy can also cure liver cancer.

Surgery is the treatment most people associate with removing a tumour. People who can't have an operation are often told, or assume, that a cure is no longer possible.

When liver cancer is found early, several treatments can potentially cure it. Surgery removes the part of the liver with the tumour. A liver transplant replaces the whole diseased liver. Ablation destroys small tumours with heat, using a needle guided by a scan. For some people, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), a highly focused form of radiotherapy, is another option. The best choice depends on the size and number of tumours, how well the rest of the liver is working, and the person's overall health.
