Lung cancer Myth Buster #07 · Symptoms & early detection

If there is no blood in the sputum, it can't be lung cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Only some people with lung cancer cough up blood. Its absence does not rule cancer out.

Why people believe it

Coughing up blood is a frightening and well-known warning sign, so people may feel reassured when their cough is "dry" or the phlegm looks normal.

What the evidence shows

Coughing up blood happens in only a proportion of people with lung cancer. Many have other symptoms instead, or none at all. On the other hand, blood in the sputum always needs a doctor's check, even if it happens only once, because it can also be caused by tuberculosis and other lung conditions.

What you can do

Don't wait for blood before getting a long-lasting cough checked. And if you ever cough up blood, see a doctor promptly.
