Lung cancer always causes a persistent cough?

A long-lasting cough is the symptom most people link with lung cancer, so someone without a cough assumes their lungs are fine.

The lungs have few nerves that sense pain, and a small tumour can grow without causing a cough, pain or breathlessness. Many early lung cancers are found by chance, for example on a chest scan done after an accident or for another illness. By the time symptoms appear, the cancer is often more advanced.

Don't wait for a cough. If a scan done for another reason mentions a spot or nodule in the lung, make sure it is followed up as your doctor advises.
