A normal chest X-ray completely rules out lung cancer?

Small tumours, or those hidden behind the heart or other structures, can be missed on an X-ray. A CT scan shows much more detail when it is needed.

A chest X-ray is a useful first test, but it is a flat picture of the whole chest, so small tumours, or those hidden behind the heart, ribs or the centre of the chest, can be missed. A CT scan takes detailed cross-sectional pictures and can find much smaller abnormalities.
