Lung cancer Myth Buster #13 · Diagnosis & staging

A PET scan can confirm lung cancer without a biopsy?

✕ Not true
Fact

A PET scan can't confirm cancer on its own. TB and other inflammation can also "light up". A tissue sample is usually needed.

Why people believe it

PET scans are advanced and expensive, so people often expect them to give a definite answer.

What the evidence shows

A PET scan shows areas of the body that are using more sugar than usual, which cancers often do. But infections and inflammation, including tuberculosis, which is common in India, can light up in exactly the same way. A PET scan is very useful for showing where disease may be and helping with staging, but a biopsy is usually still needed to confirm cancer.

What you can do

Treat a PET result as one piece of the puzzle. Don't start or refuse cancer treatment based on a PET scan alone; ask your doctor whether a biopsy is needed.
