Lung cancer is broadly divided into small-cell and non-small-cell lung cancer, which behave and are treated very differently. Non-small-cell lung cancers are then tested for gene changes (biomarkers), such as EGFR, ALK and ROS1, and for a protein called PD-L1. These results decide whether targeted tablets or immunotherapy are likely to work, and they can make a large difference to treatment.

Before treatment starts, ask whether your biopsy has been tested for biomarkers. If it hasn't, ask whether it can be.
