A lung biopsy makes cancer spread?

Spread of cancer from a properly performed lung biopsy is exceptionally uncommon. A tissue sample is usually essential for the right treatment.

Many people fear that a needle will "disturb" a tumour and make it spread, and delay or refuse a biopsy because of it.

A lung biopsy can be taken with a needle guided by a CT scan, or through a thin tube passed into the airways (bronchoscopy). Cancer spreading because of a biopsy is exceptionally uncommon. The sample is what tells doctors exactly which type of lung cancer it is, and allows testing for gene changes that decide whether targeted tablets or immunotherapy will work.
