Surgery is the only way to cure lung cancer?

Surgery is important for early lung cancer, but stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT) can also treat it with the aim of cure, especially for people who can't have an operation.

Many people believe that a cancer can only be cured by cutting it out, so those who aren't fit for surgery may think a cure is impossible.

For early non-small-cell lung cancer, surgery is often the first choice for people who are fit enough. For people who can't have, or don't want, an operation, for example because of heart or lung disease, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) delivers a few very precise, high doses of radiation to the tumour and can be given with the aim of cure. For some cancers that have reached nearby lymph nodes, a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, often followed by immunotherapy, is also given with the aim of cure.
