Women rarely get lung cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Lung cancer affects both women and men. One type, adenocarcinoma, is an important cancer in women who have never smoked.

Why people believe it

Because fewer women in India smoke, lung cancer is often thought of as a man's disease, and a woman's cough may be put down to something else for a long time.

What the evidence shows

Women do get lung cancer, including many who have never touched a cigarette. The most common type in non-smoking women is adenocarcinoma, which starts in the outer parts of the lung. Exposure to cooking smoke and second-hand smoke at home may contribute. Many of these cancers carry specific gene changes that can be treated with targeted tablets.

What you can do

Women: don't dismiss a cough, breathlessness or chest pain that won't go away because you don't smoke. Ask for it to be properly checked.
