Lung cancer Myth Buster #04 · Causes & risk

Only elderly people get lung cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Lung cancer is more common with age, but younger adults can get it too, including people who have never smoked.

Why people believe it

Most people with lung cancer are diagnosed in their 60s or later, so younger adults with a long cough are rarely suspected of having it.

What the evidence shows

Age does raise the risk, but lung cancer also occurs in people in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Younger patients, especially those who have never smoked, are more likely to have cancers driven by particular gene changes, such as EGFR or ALK. These cancers often respond very well to targeted tablets, which is one more reason why an accurate diagnosis matters.

What you can do

Age alone doesn't rule out lung cancer. If symptoms don't settle with treatment, ask for further tests, whatever your age.
