If I stop smoking, my lung cancer risk becomes zero straight away?
Quitting lowers your risk steadily over the years, but former smokers can stay at higher risk for a long time.

Why people believe it
Stopping smoking is a big achievement, and it is natural to hope that the damage is undone the moment you stop.
What the evidence shows
Your risk starts to fall after you quit and keeps falling year after year. After about ten years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is roughly half that of someone who keeps smoking. But it usually stays higher than for someone who has never smoked, especially after many years of heavy smoking. Quitting at any age still brings real benefits to the lungs, heart and overall health.
What you can do
Quit, and stay quit: it is the single most important thing you can do. Ask your doctor for help, as medicines and counselling make quitting more likely to succeed. If you smoked heavily for many years, ask whether lung cancer screening is right for you.
