Lymphoma Myth Buster #05 · Causes & warning signs

If there is no pain, fever or weight loss, lymphoma is impossible?

✕ Not true
Fact

Some people with lymphoma have only a painless swollen node. Fever, drenching night sweats and unexplained weight loss can occur, but not always.

Why people believe it

People often expect a serious illness to make them feel unwell, so a painless lump without other symptoms seems harmless.

What the evidence shows

Many people with lymphoma feel completely well and notice only a painless lump in the neck, armpit or groin. Some have "B symptoms": fevers, night sweats that soak the bedclothes, and losing more than a tenth of their body weight without trying. Others have itching, tiredness, or a cough or breathlessness from nodes in the chest.

What you can do

Don't wait for other symptoms. A painless node that persists or grows needs checking on its own.
