Lymphoma Myth Buster #18 · Modern treatment & survivorship

If the PET scan becomes negative, treatment can always be stopped immediately?

✕ Not true
Fact

A mid-treatment PET scan helps guide some lymphoma treatment plans, but any change to treatment must follow proven, disease-specific approaches.

Interim PET scanA scan partway through treatment to see how well the lymphoma is responding.

Why people believe it

When a scan shows the lymphoma has disappeared, it is natural to want to stop treatment early.

What the evidence shows

PET scans during treatment show how well the lymphoma is responding, and in certain lymphomas, such as some Hodgkin lymphoma protocols, a good response allows treatment to be reduced. But this only applies in specific, tested situations. Stopping early when not part of the plan can allow the lymphoma to return.

What you can do

Complete the full planned treatment unless your team specifically advises a change based on your PET result.
