Lymphoma Myth Buster #10 · Diagnosis & staging

Stage IV lymphoma means the disease is incurable?

✕ Not true
Fact

Unlike many solid cancers, advanced-stage lymphoma can still be curable. Hodgkin lymphoma and several aggressive lymphomas remain curable even at stage IV.

Why people believe it

In many cancers, stage IV means the cancer has spread widely and is usually not curable, so families assume the same for lymphoma.

What the evidence shows

Lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system, which travels throughout the body, so it is often widespread at diagnosis. Stage describes where it is found, but for lymphoma, the type matters more than the stage. Many people with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma are cured with modern treatment.

What you can do

Ask your doctor whether the aim of your treatment is cure, and don't lose hope because of the word "stage IV".
